Let’s Taste – Moss Wood Reds December 2016

On the second of two parts looking at Moss Wood wines, I taste four of their red wines. The Margaret River region is famous for it’s red wines made from Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and three of the four wines in this tasting are dominated by these grapes. The fourth is made from a well-known grape variety, that is not very common in this region; pinot noir.

Wines tasted;
Moss Wood Pinot Noir 2011 – RRP $60.00
Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot 2014 – RRP $65.00
Moss Wood Amy’s 2015 – RRP $38.00
Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 – RRP $65.00

The Vincast with Fiona Donald from Seppeltsfield

As a teenager, Fiona Donald sent a letter to Len Evans after reading an article he wrote, asking him how one might enter the wine industry. He encouraged her to study to be a winemaker at the best place in the country at the time; Roseworthy College. Since graduating in 1990 Fiona has worked for some of Australia’s most important wine companies in many of Australia’s finest regions. Her work since 2009 as the chief winemaker of Seppeltsfield has brought her the most joy and the most acclaim, and has revitalised one of the country’s most historic wineries.

Let’s Taste – Moss Wood Whites December 2016

Moss Wood is one of the most historic estates in the Margaret River region, with original plantings occurring in 1969. They were generous enough to send me some samples, which I will taste across two editions of Let’s Taste. On this edition I look at two of their white wines, made from varieties synonymous with the region.

Let’s Taste – S.C. Pannell McLaren Vale Grenache 2011

Just over three years ago I helped out at the annual trade day for Cellarhand Wines here in Melbourne, and as a thank you I was gifted a few bottles of wine. They have both been sitting in my cellar since then, and I decided to open one on this edition of Let’s Taste. Steve Pannell is one of the most celebrated winemakers in Australia, and amongst his gems is the S.C. Pannell McLaren Vale Grenache, already a multiple trophy winner. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, and be sure to like share and subscribe!

AAVWS 2016 Part Three – Trophies Long Lunch

Without question, the most fun part of the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show calendar is the famous Long Lunch where the trophies are announced. The five-course menu is designed by none-other than Mildura institution Stefano Di Pieri, with a selection of wines from the previous years show, many of them trophy winners. The festivities are emceed by the Chair of the AAVWS, which this year was former guest on The Vincast wine podcast and all around lovely guy, Ashley Ratcliff. Have a watch, then head to the show website to find out all of the trophy winners. Don’t forget to let me know what you think in the comments below, like share and subscribe, and be sure to visit my website and follow me on social media. Many thanks to the AAVWS for the opportunity to attend as the 2016 Fellow, and also for the use of some pictures from the Facebook page.

AAVWS 2016 Part Two – Talk and Taste seminars

On the second part of a series looking into the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, I look at one of the most valuable events of the week – particularly for the producer exhibitors – Talk & Taste. These seminars provide a forum for guest speakers, some of whom are on the judging panel, to discuss topics very pertinent to those working with alternative varieties in Australia. This year panels covered three areas, I took some (very amateurish) footage from the front row, here are a few talking points. Many thanks to the AAVWS for the opportunity to attend as the 2016 Fellow, and also for the use of some pictures from the Facebook page.

Let’s Taste – Topper’s Mountain Whites November 2016

On the day that I tasted my first Topper’s Mountain wine while at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show 2016, I also received an email from the winery asking if I’d be keen to try some recent releases of their wines, which I was very keen to do. Topper’s Mountain is based in the New England region of Northern New South Wales, the most recently recognised Geographic Indicator in Australia. They are working with quite a few different grape varieties, including many emerging examples like tannat. On this edition of Let’s Taste I looked at two of their white wines which are more in the realm of alternative style rather than variety.

Wines tasted;
Topper’s Mountain Barrel Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2013 – RRP $30.00
Topper’s Mountain Barrel Aged Gewürztraminer 2015 – RRP $35.00
