Let’s Taste – Bird On A Wire 2013 Wines

My most recent guest on my wine podcast – The Vincast – was Caroline Mooney, a celebrated Yarra Valley winemaker who worked for many years at Yering Station. She spoke about her journey and her particular love of the Marsanne grape. When we spoke she generously gave me a bottle of each of her Bird On A Wire wines from the 2013 vintage, which I was more than happy to taste on this edition of Let’s Taste.

The Vincast with Caroline Mooney from Bird On A Wire Wines

Caroline Mooney grew up in the Yarra Valley, very influenced by the wines and other agricultural products of the region. Her family has been farmers for decades and still run the Yarra Valley Dairy. Although inspired by art in her teens, she became more influenced by wine as a young adult, working in a cellar door. This began her journey in winemaking, which has included vintages outside the region and study at Charles Sturt. After working for Yering Station for many years she now has her own brand of Yarra Valley wine, Bird On A Wire.

Let’s Taste – Tahbilk Spring 2016 Releases

I’m no stranger to Tahbilk Wines, having not only tasted a number of releases over the last 12 months on Let’s Taste, but also having chatted with owner Alister Purbrick on my wine podcast The Vincast about one year ago. They sent me some new releases for Spring, and I opened them up to have a look. The four wines were;
Marsanne 2016
Riesling 2016
Viognier 2016
Cane Cut Marsanne 2012 (500ml)

The Vincast with Sierra Reed Milne from Reed Wines

Growing up in Southern California presented an incredible opportunity to Sierra Reed Milne when she was scouted for a modelling career at a young age, which in turn gave her the chance to travel and experience other cultures. After gaining a following on the 18th season of Survivor, she dreamed of becoming a television travel program host, but couldn’t have imagined that it would be realised in New Zealand. It was here that she began her wine journey after working closely with the Family of Twelve, a journey that has led to her marrying an Australian, and making her own wine based in Victoria. Check out my Let’s Taste video of one of her wines here!

Let’s Taste – Manon “Love Lies Bleedings” Pinot Noir 2015

While visiting my new favourite local wine retailer Cult of the Vine, I picked up a bottle of Australian wine to try. The Manon wines are part of the exciting movement for very low intervention winemaking, many of which come from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. Let me know what you thought of my impressions, if you agreed with me or not, in the comments below.

The Vincast with Guill de Pury from Yeringberg Wines

In the latter half of the 19th Century, there were a number of very important arrivals into the Yarra Valley region, less than 100km east of Melbourne, who happened to be Swiss. These were important viticulturists who made a name for Australian wine in Paris and London, winning hearts, palates and medals. One of these pioneering Swiss families was the de Purys, who established Yeringberg in the area now known as Coldstream. My guest on this episode is Guill de Pury, the third-generation owner responsible for reviving the wine growing on the property at the end of the 1960s. He shared the important history of the family, the region, the farm and his own journey of (re)discovery.

Let’s Taste – Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 & 1996

A week away at the snow with my Dad requires some serious wines, so I took up two bottles of the iconic Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon from my cellar. I thought it might be interesting to open them both at the same time, and see how such an important red wine in the Margaret River develops, and how vintage conditions play a big part in that ageing process. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Let’s Taste – Yalumba The Scribbler 2013

The final in a series looking at wines from Yalumba thanks to a box of samples sent by Pippa Merrett from Hill-Smith Family Vineyards. The Scribbler is a classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and is a great wine for the price. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
