I’ve long been a supporter of the Out of Step Wine Co wines made by former guests of The Vincast wine podcast, Nathan Reeves and David Chatfield. When Dave recently got in touch to let me know that they had released their first chardonnay since 2014, I was thrilled to have a chance to taste it. The Brajkovich family emigrated to New Zealand from Croatia in the 1930s, bringing with them some experience growing grapes for wine production. After purchasing property just outside of Auckland in the 1940s, the family tended the vineyard for decades until officially launching the Kumeu River brand in 1986. The winemaker is the eldest son Michael, who has not only taken their wines to a world-class level, but also became New Zealand’s first Master of Wine in 1989! Michael was my guest on this episode of The Vincast, sharing his family’s and his own stories.

Michael Brajkovich MW from Kumeu River

Moss Wood is one of the most historic estates in the Margaret River region, with original plantings occurring in 1969. They were generous enough to send me some samples, which I will taste across two editions of Let’s Taste. On this edition I look at two of their white wines, made from varieties synonymous with the region.
I was so thrilled to recently find out that one of my former colleagues from my days in the cellar door at Domaine Chandon Australia, has launched a wine brand with their partner! Camille & Chris have managed to source some outstanding Yarra Valley fruit to craft their first Fetherston vintage from, and I was excited to taste the wines and share my impressions. Ed Carr is unquestionably Australia’s finest sparkling winemaker, but you may not be aware that he has pretty much always had that focus on Australian bubbles. Initially entering the wine industry as a microbiologist (from the milk industry in fact), he found a real interest in the science and process of winemaking. In 1986 he was appointed the sparkling winemaker for Seaview based in the Barossa Valley, where he remained until being offered a position to oversee all sparkling production for BRL Hardy (now Accolade Wines). This was when Arras was conceived of, and through his tireless efforts and a close relationship with Tasmania, he has built it to be one of the finest sparkling producers in the world.

A bottle from the cellar, in celebration for my beloved Western Bulldogs being in the Grand Final (recorded before the game), my bottle of the Yeringberg Chardonnay 2004. As mentioned on this and other episodes, Guill de Pury from Yeringberg was my very special guest on Episode 100 of The Vincast wine podcast. Unfortunately this bottle had experienced premature oxidation (cork fault that lets air into the bottle and rapidly increases the ageing), so it wasn’t in the best shape. But I hope to taste some more recent releases of Yeringberg here very soon!

Yeringberg Chardonnay 2004
Some more samples hit the tasting table on this edition of Let’s Taste, this time two wines from one of the biggest producers on the Bellarine Peninsula, Scotchmans Hill. The Bellarine Peninsula is on the cusp of cool and moderate in terms of climate, so a range of varieties can produce wine. Here I’m tasting the 2014 Chardonnay and the 2013 Shiraz, let me know what you think in the comments below!

My most recent guest on my wine podcast – The Vincast – was Caroline Mooney, a celebrated Yarra Valley winemaker who worked for many years at Yering Station. She spoke about her journey and her particular love of the Marsanne grape. When we spoke she generously gave me a bottle of each of her Bird On A Wire wines from the 2013 vintage, which I was more than happy to taste on this edition of Let’s Taste.

Caroline Mooney grew up in the Yarra Valley, very influenced by the wines and other agricultural products of the region. Her family has been farmers for decades and still run the Yarra Valley Dairy. Although inspired by art in her teens, she became more influenced by wine as a young adult, working in a cellar door. This began her journey in winemaking, which has included vintages outside the region and study at Charles Sturt. After working for Yering Station for many years she now has her own brand of Yarra Valley wine, Bird On A Wire.
