The first I became aware of Bob Colman was as a listener of my wine podcast The Vincast, and met him in person at Rootstock Sydney 2015. He’s been a fan of the new wave of low-intervention wine in Australia, and started making his own using fruit he purchased, made in his shed in the Blue Mountains. Let’s Taste – Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling 2004
Many years ago when I was sourcing wine on the auction market, I was looking for iconic examples of Australian wines, and there are few more iconic rieslings in this country than the Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling from the Clare Valley. I’ve been holding onto this 2004 vintage for as long as I could, and today is the day. Have you had some memorable experiences drinking mature Clare Valley riesling?

Let’s Taste – Clonakilla Riesling 2004
For a long time the Intrepid Cellar was made up mostly of wines sourced from trawling the Langtons auctions. Back in those days I was educating my palate on classic Australian wines, and preferably ones with some age. One style I was particularly interested in was aged riesling. Clonakilla is a producer from the Canberra District of New South Wales famous for its Shiraz Viognier, but it was the more accessible Riesling I was interested in when I bought it. Here are my impressions of the 2004 vintage from my cellar, with some help from Milly our dog. I’m always happy to receive samples from wineries, particularly from wineries in the Hill-Smith Family Vineyards portfolio. I’m also always thrilled to be re-acquainted with a producer from my past, extra special when they are as historic as Eden valley-based Pewsey Vale. Let’s Taste – Millon Estate 2014 wines

Best’s Wines Great Western – 31/01/2016
These were wines that I tasted while visiting Best’s Wines in Great Western, on their invitation to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the estate’s establishment , and also to record an episode of The Vincast with owner Viv Thompson. Riesling 2003
Lime sherbet floral. Quite viscous fresh broad, very shy at the moment, possibly an awkward phase.
Riesling 2014
Flinty spritzy zippy zesty like cordial yellow flowers. Nice intensity.
Foudre Ferment Riesling 2014
Lemon barley cordial, a little toasty. Dried pear, toasty honey, crystallised ginger.
Chardonnay 2013
Pithy grapefruit white peach kiwi. Quite toasty but not too flabby, hints of smokiness dried orange and a bit leesy too.
Pinot Noir 2014
Tight light bright lithe cherries strawberries. Actually quite yummy and drinkable.
Dolcetto 2013
Black fruits, sweet black olives, fresh soft but without the bite of Langhe dolcetto.
Riesling 1995
Oily viscous ambrosial lime blossom, walnuts maple syrup blue cheese, apricot. Constantly evolving.
Foudre Ferment Riesling 2015
Toasty almonds, peaches and cream.
Bin. 0 Shiraz 2014
Peppery briny spicy pickles and black fruits. Solid soft focused fresh juicy fruits and spices.
Bin. 0 Shiraz 1984
Savoury earthy meaty leathery red fruits. Still exceptionally fresh bright fruits, lively acids, some dried red fruits but fresh black fruits, rosemary sage, unctuous soft delicious.

The Vincast with Hunter Smith from Frankland Estate
Frankland Estate is without question one of the finest riesling producers in Australia, and it was Hunter Smith’s parents who established the vineyard in an area still very under-appreciated. When he took over the running of the estate he decided to convert to organic viticulture which has had a profound influence on quality recently. Hunter is so committed to the maligned riesling variety that he created the Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting (now Riesling Downunder) to showcase the quality and continued potential here in Australia.

The Vincast with Johannes Hasselbach from Weingut Gunderloch
Weingut Gunderloch in the Rheinhessen region of Germany is one the greatest wineries in Europe if you are in the know. They are the only winery in the world to have received 100 points for the same wine in three separate vintages, for their incredibly rare trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). Johannes Hasselbach hadn’t intended on running his family’s estate, until in 2010 when his father became ill (since recovered), and his sister who had been involved with the winemaking relocating to Austria to work with her husband. An intrepid philosophy led Johannes to travel and explore, and he has slowly began to introduce this into the winery since then. He joined me in the Treasury Gardens of Melbourne on a sunny morning to talk about his journey.
