Growing up in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand it is not surprising that Michael John Corbett ended up working in the wine industry, even though he doesn’t come from a wine family. After studying winemaking he had the opportunity to work vintages in Europe, which was where he discovered a great love of the grenache variety. After originally meeting in Hawkes Bay, he joined forces with Burgundian Edouard Maurisset-Latour and his Australian wife Ali to launch Vanguardist Wines, producing incredible wines from the Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale.
I’ve been seeing quite a bit of the Michael Hall wines around Melbourne of late, and it’s clear to understand why. I was very excited to have an opportunity to taste more wines from the range, and I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below!

I was thrilled to be introduced to a new producer on this edition of Let’s Taste with The Intrepid Wino. Michael Hall – originally from the United Kingdon – produces wine from fruit sourced from the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa Valley and the Eden Valley. The d’Arenberg sample party continues with some 2017 white wines. What can be said about d’Arenberg that I haven’t said already? I just it just remains for me to interview Chester Osborne at some point for The Vincast.
Deviation Road is an artisan producer based in the Adelaide Hills region. Last year I opened two of their sparkling wines here on Let’s Taste, and I’ve again been sent some samples to share my impressions. For the past fourteen years, Ashley Ratcliff has worked for arguably Australia’s most important family-owned wine business, Hill-Smith Family Vineyards. Over those years he worked in many different elements of the business, from viticulture to marketing, operations to running one of the wineries. More recently he has established a vineyard in the Riverland – considered one of the warm-hot irrigated regions known for large volume grape production – and has been planting more alternative varieties to show the potential for these grapes in the region, particularly for high quality fruit. He has now thrown himself 100% into Ricca Terra Farms, and even has other plans for the future.
While visiting my new favourite local wine retailer Cult of the Vine, I picked up a bottle of Australian wine to try. The Manon wines are part of the exciting movement for very low intervention winemaking, many of which come from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. The guys from Deviation Road sent me two of their Sparkling Wines to taste, no doubt in the lead up to the Festive Season. They are experts in methode traditionelle sparkling wines, and these two perfectly exhibit that. The wines are the Loftia Vintage Brut 2013 (RRP $45.00) and the Altair Brut Rosé NV (RRP $32.00).
