I was honoured to be invited as a guest to the Makers & Muses event as part of the 2017 Melbourne Food & Wine Festival – which celebrated it’s 25th anniversary this year and coincided with the World’s Top 50 Restaurants Awards Ceremony – and who should be at this unique event but a number of former guests of the podcast. Taking advantage of the opportunity I chatted with them about the 2017 vintage, the MFWF and it’s events, and what the concept of Makers & Muses means to them. I’ve been sitting on this second bottle for a few years now, and thought it was about time to open it. The Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz has one of the best modern pedigrees for shiraz in Australia, and it is richly deserved, as it is one of the most consistent and age-able. Former guest of the podcast Dan Buckle was the winemaker when this 2004 vintage was made, and I was excited to see how it was travelling. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
Ben Haines wasn’t sure what he wanted to do as a career, but his father sensed that the wine industry would be a great option. After studies and experience in viticulture, he discovered that quality doesn’t stop once the grapes are harvested, it continues all the way through to bottling. Postgraduate studies in winemaking lead him on a career path that would include vintage experiences overseas, and eventually led he was appointed chief winemaker at famed Grampians estate, Mount Langi Ghiran. Ben spoke about his journey on this episode of The Vincast.
Back when I was scouring the Langtons auctions for good wine with a bit of age on it, I managed to secure a lot of six bottles of the Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz 1998. This is the last of those six bottles, and I’ve enjoyed all of them to varying levels. This was probably the best of the six, and I was happy to share why. Dan Buckle is no slouch when it comes to winemaking, gaining experience at some of the most awarded wineries in Victoria. Having worked for Yering Station & Mount Langi Ghiran he joined Domaine Chandon Australia as the Chief Winemaker several years ago, breathing new life into their sparkling and still wines. Honouring his original entry into wine as a teenager, he also produces some of his own wines from the Mornington Peninsula under the Circe brand. He joins me on this episode of the podcast to chat about his journey.
