Yeringberg is one of the most historic viticultural sites in the Yarra Valley, and is also one of the oldest family owned wineries in Australia. The de Pury family have been in this part of Victoria since the 1860s, and have an incredible connection with their land, farming a number of different agricultural products. They make a number of outstanding wines, and the Yeringberg sits at the top. I opened the 2005 vintage from my cellar and shared my impressions, let me know what you think in the comments below.
My first real wine job was working in the cellar door at Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley, which I did for 18 months from the beginning of 2006. One of my colleagues there lived at Coldstream Hills as her partner was one of the winemakers. She very generously put together a mixed dozen of back vintages of their Reserve wines, many of which are still in my cellar. I decided to open the three wines from the 2004 vintage (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Cabernet Sauvignon), and these are my impressions. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Josh got in touch with me via intrepidwino.com and offered me the chance to look at some wines from a brand that has recently been introduced into the domestic market, previously only being available overseas. The four Millon Estate wines I tasted are made from Eden Valley fruit, and are all from the 2014 vintage. Here are my impressions, let me know what you think in the comments below!
Last September my amazing Grandmother passed away at the incredible age of 89 (vintage 1927). As my family went through the emotional process of organising and cleaning her house of 40 years, I discovered a number of bottles of wine in the cupboard under the stairs. With permission from my family I opened some of these bottles on this video, and the results were quite surprising.
Recent guest of my podcast (The Vincast) Daniel Fischl gave me a bottle of each of his currently available wines, and one of them was the 2013 vintage of the Linnaea Vineyards Arlequin Cabernet Sauvignon from the Heathcote region in Victoria. I opened the bottle, and these are my impressions.
The lovely Tash Stoodley from d’Arenberg was lovely enough to send me some more bottles of wine to taste. These are the three icon reds from the McLaren Vale d’Arenberg vineyards; The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mouvedre, The Dead Arm Shiraz, and The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon. All three have a recommended retail price of $65.00, and were from the 2012 vintage.
Best’s Great Western is one of Victoria’s oldest and most-loved wine producing families, and will next year celebrate their 150th anniversary. They sent me three of their new release wines for me to taste; Riesling 2015, Bin. 1 Shiraz 2014 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. All three have a RRP of $25.00, and are now available.

I opened my last bottle of Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Cabernet Merlot 1998, and showed how best to open an older wine that may have a more fragile cork, in a very gentle way.
At home for dinner I had a look in the Intrepid Cellar, I pulled out two iconic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon wines and did a Let’s Tate comparison. The first wine was the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2000, which I bought some years ago on Langtons. The second was the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2000, which I bought at a local bottle shop. I was at my parents place, which meant I had access to my cellar, and so I opened up a few wines from the ’90s. First I opened and tasted the Penfolds Bin 389 1996, then the Seville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1999.
