I’ve tasted some wines from Shaw Vineyard Estate on Let’s Taste before, and was keen to see some new wines from them. I don’t often get the opportunity to try wines from Canberra District so this was a treat. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

For a long time the Intrepid Cellar was made up mostly of wines sourced from trawling the Langtons auctions. Back in those days I was educating my palate on classic Australian wines, and preferably ones with some age. One style I was particularly interested in was aged riesling. Clonakilla is a producer from the Canberra District of New South Wales famous for its Shiraz Viognier, but it was the more accessible Riesling I was interested in when I bought it. Here are my impressions of the 2004 vintage from my cellar, with some help from Milly our dog. For the fifth year in a row, Margaret River producer Voyager Estate hosted a masterclass in Melbourne and other Australian cities to benchmark new releases of some of their wines. This was my second time at this event; one of my first entries on this blog spoke about the first time back in September of 2011, just before I left for my trip. The exercise is designed to show sommeliers, buyers and media that Voyager is very confident about the quality of their wine against exceptional examples from around the world. Showing even more hubris, they do this against their three key wines; chardonnay, shiraz and a cabernet/merlot blend. That’s serious chutzpah.
Tight lean citrus, excellent purity, possibly lacking a bit of depth and weight. Nice balance though.
Nice depth and concentration, somewhat ethereal, showing that lovely musk character.
Marsanne Roussanne 2011
Intense bold floral fruit nose. Fine delicate balanced and savoury. Restrained and very long.
Quite spicy savoury, very light and fresh but surprisingly explosive in vibrancy.
Shiraz Viognier 2012
Extremely intense violets and spice. Fresh intense clean and pure, long and approachable but with character.
