The Vincast with Patrick Sullivan

Patrick Sullivan is one of the most exciting young winemakers in Victoria, and the type of wines he is producing are dramatically changing the discussion about what is wine, what is Australian wine, and what is quality Australian wine. He has recently bought land in West Gippsland and will eventually become the vigneron (both growing the grapes and making the wines) he has so long wanted to be. On this episode he chats about his experiences and philosophies, and why a winemaking degree didn’t really help him much.

Wine Trade Tasting Behind the Scenes

In August I took some behind-the-scenes footage at a few wine trade tastings here in Melbourne, and I thought I’d share it with you with the idea of showing how portfolio tastings are conducted. The two tastings were for Cellarhand Wines, and combined tasting of World Wine Estates, Enoteca Sydney and Vinous Imports.

Let’s Taste – Delinquente 2015 Wines

The guys from Delinquente Wines got in touch with me through my website, asking if I’d be interested in tasting the new 2015 releases. With labels like these I was intrigued, so I had a taste and here are my impressions. Fruit is sourced from the Ricca Terra Farms vineyards in Riverland, and as many would know I love Italian grapes.

After recording this week’s episode of The Vincast wine podcast with Mario Marson, he gave me a bottle each of his Vinea Marson Sangiovese 2010 & 2011 vintages. Here are my impressions of the wines, and be sure to listen to the episode of The Vincast with Mario here.

Sommeliers Taste Wines Blind

I joined some sommelier friends recently for a blind tasting session. Each of them have been trained using the Certified Sommelier Method, using a grid to break down a wine into its components for the purpose of analysis, then make an assesment about what the wine is. It was quite fascinating to watch them dissect wines blind, but still showed the subjectivity of wine.

Let’s Taste – Carlei Estate Nebbiolo 2009 & 2010

I was given a bottle each of the 2009 and 2010 vintages of the Carlei Estate Nebbiolo by Dave Carlei today, and I was keen to see how the two vintages looked.

Let’s Taste – Out of Step Chardonnay 2014

I bought a bottle of the Out of Step Syme on Yarra Chardonnay 2014 from Rathdowne Cellars for Saturday night Netflix with the girlfriend, and cracked the seal to have a look at it.

Let’s Taste – Icon Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

At home for dinner I had a look in the Intrepid Cellar, I pulled out two iconic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon wines and did a Let’s Tate comparison. The first wine was the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2000, which I bought some years ago on Langtons. The second was the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2000, which I bought at a local bottle shop. Let me know what you think of my impressions, and be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel for more videos like this.

Let’s Taste – Vigneron Schmölzer & Brown Brunnen Pinot Noir 2014

I was out for dinner with my girlfriend at one of my favourite locals – Pinotta – and I ordered a bottle off the list that I’ve been eager to try ever since having Tessa Brown as a guest on The Vincast. Here are my very impromptu impressions of the wine, which did open up lovely over the course of dinner. Have a listen back to the episode with Tess here, to hear all about Jeremy and her project in Beechworth.

The Vincast with Josh Cooper from Cobaw Ridge

https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=81362

On part-one of this special episode of The Vincast, I’m joined by Josh Cooper. Josh’s family established Cobaw Ridge in the Macedon Ranges the same year he was born, at a time when growing grapes for wine was pretty risky in such a cool climate. They found great success with their wines, particularly after converting to biodynamics. Josh spent time studying viticulture and winemaking at Adelaide University, and in the past few years has not stopped, working vintages in Australia and Europe. Recently he has started a few local projects of his own, making some left-of-centre styles that are turning a few heads.
