Many years ago when I was sourcing wine on the auction market, I was looking for iconic examples of Australian wines, and there are few more iconic rieslings in this country than the Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling from the Clare Valley. I’ve been holding onto this 2004 vintage for as long as I could, and today is the day. Have you had some memorable experiences drinking mature Clare Valley riesling?

The Vincast with Anna Martens from Vino di Anna
Anna Martens began her wine career just outside of her home town of Adelaide, working with one of Australia’s foremost authorities on winemaking, Brian Croser. After spending almost ten years at Petaluma, she wanted to spread her wine-wings. She spent some time in New Zealand studying for the Master of Wine, but soon ended up working at the prestigious Super-Tuscan estate of Ornellaia. This was where she met her eventual husband Eric Nairoo, and through his own business importing into the UK, she was introduced to natural wines. Eventually they decided to find somewhere she could produce her own wine, and they chose the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, where she now produces Vino di Anna.

Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling 1998
Subtle dried coconut, lemon butter, creamy oily nuts. Subtle rich and creamy texture, oily and dense. Soft mid palate, exceptionally long.

Cloudy Bay Late Harvest Riesling 2004
Very oily and keroseney, kumquat quince and orange blossom. A little closed flat and thin, creamy oily lanolin, lemon butter.

Josef Chromy Pinot Gris 2012
Light crisp and spicy on the nose, a little orange rind and cinnamon. Full oily and a little sweet, warmish and a little aggressive, not enough fruit to support the weight.

Teusner ‘The Empress’ Riesling 2011 (Eden Valley)
Lovely crisp fresh citrussy lime and lemon, hints of white peach and green apples, slight flicks of minerality. Very vibrant fruit, juicy and full, bold in flavour and lacking in zingy acids compared to European examples, nice breadth and extension on the palate.
