J. Lassalle Brut Rosé Premier Cru
Bold brisk textured generous but balanced focused and fresh. Nice delicate berry components.

Domaine Thomas Sancerre 2011
Bright fruity musky nose. Clean pure fresh safe sancerre.

Billaud-Simon Chablis 2011
Very shy flinty brisk citrus, subdued. A bit dirty but certainly has personality. Worth looking at a different vintage.

Michelot White Burgundy 2009
Classic aromatics, fresh clean and slightly fruit sweet, focused and persistent. Nice savoury texture.

Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett 2009
Open and clean, classic example of the vintage.

Max Ferdinand Richter Auslese 2007
Tight clean fresh vibrant exquisitely balanced minerality and sweetness.

Thierry Violot-Guillemard Red Burgundy 2010
Nice clean precise cherry nose, delicate. Fresh balanced long and pleasant.

Tollot-Beaut & Fils Chorey-Les-Beaune 2010
Some earthy burnt elements, a touch dirty. Old-school style, very savoury and grainy textural, good acidity. Little fruit.

Domaine de l’Ameillaud Cairanne 2010
Spicy crushed clove. Hmmm tight and a touch volatile. Not really.

Domaine de la Mordoree Lirac 2009
Nice intense sweet dark plum notes, just a hint of spice. Full juicy building texture spice and acidity. Very fresh yet broad appeal. Warmish.

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2010
Very tight intense acidity. Exceedingly fresh and linear.

Wonderful.

Bianca Vigna Prosecco DOC
Nice crisp clean citrus apple, classic prosecco. Fresh bold fruit and warm mouthfeel. Super pleasant.

Louis Roederer Brut Premier
Creamy buttery autolysis, a little fat and rich bit still fresh and clean. Minimal complexity, certainly vibrant.

Louis Roederer Rosé 2007
Crisp bright citrus red grapefruit blood orange. Long and precise. A little mushroomy pinot on the nose.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2005
Quite wild and complex, nutty mushroom leesy Camembert. Extraordinarily delicate, fine and elegant, long and ethereal creaminess. A cut above the 2004.

Peramor Verdejo Rueda 2011
Quite subtle aromatically, thin and watery. Not giving much at all.

Monte Tondo Soave Classico 2012
Disappointing, suffers same problem as Verdejo.

Louis Jadot Macon Village White 2011
Subtle to say the least, fresh and clean but lacking much personality.

Focused tight balanced fresh yet bold. Is what it says.

Vietti Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne 2010
Spicy nutmeg, black cherry red plum. Bright fresh approachable but focused.

Vietti Barbera d’Alba Vigna Scarrone 2010
Tighter leaner on the nose, density and focus. Fuller yet softer, more and longer tannins.

Louis Jadot Cote de Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain 2009
Safe. A tad hot. Serviceable.

Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 2009
More depth and precision, more character and intensity. Delivers.

Pure Garrigue Cotes-du-Rhone Red 2011
Dense dark red fruits, very limited amounts of spice.

Soft dense yet fresh and focused.

Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2009
Totally against the grain for the appellation and vintage. Light fresh and vibrant rather than full soft and dark.

Serviceable but uninteresting.

Mazzei Mix 36 2008
Very international oak maceration nose. Very tight and focused but not full heavy or overworked. Focused fine yet intense tannins. Needs a lot more time for oak to blow off.

Chenin Blanc 2012
Finesse and elegance, restraint and florals. Clean light fresh, not overly sweet but long.

Rosé 2011
Lovely savoury style. Plenty of personality and excitement, food friendly balanced and long.

Lower Yarra Pinot Noir 2011
Light style characteristic of the vintage, nice savoury fungal game aromas. Vibrant but fresh and intense, tight lean and long.

Upper Yarra Pinot noir 2011
A bit leaner and quieter, but bolder and more intense on the palate. Still very fresh but more contained and potential to be explosive.

Shiraz 2011
Wilder herbal pepper notes, a touch green spice. A little too raw and wild, too much whole bunch, overwhelms fruit.

Carinyena Catalunya 2010
Dense and reflective of variety and region.

Jacopo Cossater – Italian wine journalist & blogger

Roughly one year ago I was in Sicily and I was fortunate enough to encounter – at the same time and place – two people whom were amongst the most influential of my journey. The previous several weeks had been difficult in the south of Italy, with researching and securing appointments at wineries in Puglia, Abruzzo, Marche and Umbria. My expectations were modest for the largest island in the Mediterranean, as I had similar issues finding information about wineries, and also contacting and locating them. Of significant help to me was the team at Planeta, who are at the forefront of promoting not only Sicilian wine but the indigenous grape varieties found there. Through Planeta I was introduced to Arianna Occhipinti who is quickly becoming the shining star of all Italian wine, and whom I hope to interview in the near future. Visiting her was the other person, and his name is Jacopo Cossater.

Jacopo writes his own highly visited blog and is one of the contributors to the most influential wine website in Italy, Intravino. At the time he was on his own journey of wine discovery, through the central and southern regions of Italy over a period of several weeks. He wrote specifically about his experiences attempting to discover wines of great authenticity and personality as it is an area he has great passion for. One of the most honest, humble and personable people I have met he engenders both respect and affection from producers and communicators alike. Over several meals we were able to share our philosophies (which aren’t that different), and I was able to tell him of my own trip. When I returned to Perugia where he is based with his wife Laura, I was lucky enough to be able to introduce him to my parents as we were travelling together at the time. I was honoured when Jacopo interviewed me for Intravino not long after I returned to Australia, and as someone who is on the pulse of exciting movements in Italian wines, I wanted to return the honour by interviewing him.

Very subdued, a little sour, reminiscent of apple juice.

Wonderful integration, lovely balance, off-dry and long, delicate fruit and floral notes.

Salty briny nose, slightly different texturally, good acid freshness, wonderful finish, nice balance, ageing potential.

Richer on the palate, lovely savoury off-dry, slight Japanese flavour.

Beautiful richness, wonderful balance, nice long finish.

Lemon barley cordial apple, extremely concentrated, amazingly deep and rich, lovely and fresh, great finish.

Slatey mineral, very fresh zingy nose, ripe lemon smoked honey, lemon sherbet, great brightness, textural fruit, zesty lime.

Peach blossom apricot and honey, nice clean and fresh, great concentration of fruit, nice balance, lovely pure expression, lime and grapefruit.

Really lovely zingy fresh fruit, fresh citrus and green papaya, citric acid spritz, very young.

Candied aromatics, dried banana, creamy soda, coke lollies. Intense minerals, rich fruit on the mid-palate, more complex and deep.

Rounder fuller depth, bright acid freshness, nice balance, very vibrant and fresh.

Riper tropical pineapple aromas, hints of oily kerosene, fuller texture and viscosity, ripeness and sweetness, some savoury earthy smokiness.

Talcy soapy, very delicate semi-sweet, ripe citrus and stone fruit, viscosity and texture.

Oiliness starting to show on the nose, quite treacly and syrupy, nice complex savoury elements, lovely warming fruit salad & custard.

Schifeterassen Reserve Riesling 2010
Nice floral botrytised aromas, pear peach nectarine, brisk zippy acids, nice balance, hints of minerality, good concentration, a bit of texture, great clean finish.

Von Blauern Schiefer Riesling 2010
Slightly more candied nose and citrus, grapefruit concentration, sweetness doesn’t stand out, quite sharp, immense minerality.

Kirchberg Erste Lage Reserve Riesling 2010
Different minerality, slightly deeper, lime and peach, seems more complex and floaty.

Rottgen Erste Lage Reserve Riesling 2010
Much more intense, fuller more depth, riper stone fruit, acids more tempered, longer on the palate, very aromatic floral notes.

Uhlen Erste Lage B Reserve Riesling 2010
Very serious wine, blue slate, brooding complexity, very long, builds on the palate.

Uhlen Erste Lage LaubalyReserve Riesling 2010
Sweetness more prominent, broader rounder style, textural floral minerality.

Ultra Brut
Zero dosage, very zippy bright fresh citrus. Lovely and crisp yet soft and creamy, approachable bright clean pure fruit, chardonnay component very strong.

Millesime 2002
Toastier richer depth, still very clean and precise, harmony of acid and lees.

Grand Siecle
Quite toasty and yeasty, interesting blend of three vintages, perhaps lost its way a little bit.

Rosé de Saignée
Quite dark for a champagne rosé, and aromatically has similar dark berry characters coupled with subtle cheesy game aromas. It floats nicely between freshness and complexity, making it a versatile aperitif or food wine.

Tradition 1er Cru
A blend of 10% pinot noir and 90% chardonnay, and with full malo has lovely creamy sweet yoghurt lees autolysis character. It has delicious fresh cumquat citrus fruit flavours, but also a nice slightly savoury baked filo pastry element.

Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru
More creaminess in the citrus fruit, and almost non-alcoholic apple cider sweetness.

Terre de Vertus 2007 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs
With no dosage liqueur there was very chalky green apple fruitiness on the nose, with a hint of salted cashews underneath. On the palate there was much fuller texture and depth than the NV wines, the apple picking up some custard elements.

Vielle de Cramant Grand Cru 2006
This became more vanilla and caramel, introducing more pear and orange fruit to the mix.

Had serious complexity and length on it, hinting at its matchability with food.

Terre de Vertus 1997
Disgorged the previous day, and although the colour had barely changed the nose and palate was evolving into a much more tertiary area; hints of marmalade, mushrooms, roasted nuts and vintage cheddar.

Aromatic grassy kiwi lime elderberry, light fresh mid-palate, bright acids.

2011 Ay Pinot Noir
Slightly savoury cherry stalks, contained but broad and expressive, passion fruit zing and zest.

2011 Mesnil-sur-Oger Chardonnay
Apple lime nashi grapefruit, great lines through the palate.

Extra Brut
Toasty for a Brut Nature, dried herbs and honey, great drive across the palate but not straight down the middle, nice spicy berry notes, savoury sweetness.

Brut Reserve
Honeyed richness, lees doesn’t get in the way.

Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru
Exceptionally well-integrated acids, freshness and drive, rich citrus creaminess.

Brut Sous Bois
Smells like white burgundy, crunchy and really complex. Amazing wine with food.

Vintage 2004
Rich creamy light caramel, apple & pear custard, subtle toast and sesame, broad with rolling soft berry and mandarin.

Brut Blanc de Blancs 1999
Struck-match Chablis style, reductive dried citrus peel, full yet racy acids, big citrus fruit sweetness, powerful expression but subtle and complex.

Nicolas Francois 2000
Soft subtle sweet butternut pumpkin, light soft full rich and subtle, young yet complex, toasty smoked artichokes, fruit-forward at the moment.
