The Vincast with Sharon Flynn from The Fermentary

Sharon Flynn had several periods in her life that influenced what would become her passion and business, but she wasn’t aware at the time. The first experience she remembers having an impact on her interest in fermented foods was making sour dough in Seattle. Her dedication to fermented foods really kicked off when her daughter became ill and she researched good bacteria and their influence in building resistances and immunities. When friends and family started asking for her products and insisting on paying for it, this led her on The Fermentary path, and it’s grown since then to be one of the best places to buy sauerkraut and other amazing products.

Let’s Taste – Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1998

To celebrate my 34th birthday, I opened up something with a bit of age from the cellar. Cullen are one of the most important producers in Margaret River – in Western Australia for that matter – and their crown jewel is the Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon. This 1998 vintage was before it was officially given it’s name. It’s been in the cellar for a while, so I was glad to have the chance to drink it. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Let’s Taste – Mitchell Harris Mataro 2013

Some years ago when I worked with winemaker John Harris at Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley. After leaving John joined forces with his wife’s family and they launched Mitchell Harris Wines, using predominantly Pyrenees fruit. A few years ago they opened a cellar door/restaurant/shop in Ballarat, and I stopped in on the way back from Dunkeld recently. I bought this bottle and shared my impressions, let me know what you think in the comments below.

Let’s Taste – Dirty Black Denim

I’ve been in contact with Lawrence Scanlon from Dirty Black Denim for a while through social media, but it wasn’t until recently that I finally met him in person. He and his brother make a range of wines, focused particularly on Italian grape varieties, and I’ve been hassling him to try some of them. I was thrilled to finally be able to do so with two of the recently released 2016 wines. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Let’s Taste – Two Metre Tall Snakebite

When I finally visited Two Metre Tall Brewhouse in the Derwent Valley Tasmania, I was totally seduced. Not only by the scenery, nor the product. But by Ashley Huntington in particular. I couldn’t resist in bringing home a bottle of something home with me, and that something was the Snakebite. Here are my impressions of this unique product, let me know what you think in the comments!

Let’s Taste – Yeringberg Red & Pinot Noir 2004

Yeringberg was my epiphany producer; the 1997 Pinot Noir is the reason I continued working in the wine industry. Back when I worked at Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley, I went to Yeringberg’s Open Day to taste, and bought these two 2004 wines. I’ve relinquished them from my cellar and thought I’d share my impressions. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
